History of Swedish Missiles

In the mid 1940´s a study of different missile configuration started in Sweden.

This study was performed by the department now named Swedish Defense Material Administration (FMV).

The initiative leading to development of most of the early Swedish missile types was taken by Chief Engineer Tore Edlén. He also coined the Swedish term “Robot” for the Swedish missiles.

This word was shaped from the Czech word “Robota”, meaning slave labour, or as in this case a missile, programmed to fulfil given orders. Used by the Czech dramatist Karel Čapek in his play “R. U. R.”(Rossums Universal Robots), given for the first time in 1923).
